The CBR has directed all the collectors of sales tax that the adjudication work should not be neglected after the abolition of Adjudication Collectorates. All the collectors should immediately compile the updated data about the pendency of adjudication cases.
A concerned CBR official told Business Recorder here on Thursday that there is a slight decrease in disposal of adjudication cases by regional collectorates. The performance was judged on the basis of the "monthly performance report" submitted by the concerned adjudication officials. Obviously, it would take some time to adjudicate cases under the new environment by the concerned additional collectors, who were empowered to adjudicate all such cases.
Under the new system, the taxpayers would not be required to go to a separate organisation (adjudication collectorates) for settlement of legal matters. Previously, the adjudication authorities usually request the executive collectorate to comment on a case, which is a time consuming process, which results in delay.
The additional collectors and deputy collectors of the regional collectorates would decide cases in minimum possible time.
The additional collectors will be the highest level of adjudication officers who will work under executive collectors.
There is enough evidence that the adjudication collectorates have not been a successful experiment. These offices were unable to facilitate trade and industry through quick disposal of cases. Over 96 percent of the cases have been decided in favour of the department and delaying tactics are used to blackmail the aggrieved taxpayers who come for justice.
